DIY-ing your childhood montage? Read this first.

RIP license is needed for those who wanted to DIY your montages. It is not the hotel who requested for it. From what my hotel told me is that, there will be a representative from this RECORDING INDUSTRY PERFORMANCE SINGAPORE PTE LTD who will send a SPY randomly to any wedding to spot check If couples are found to be without this particular license. Both the hotel, and the couple will be fine... I doubt anyone would want to take a risk on your AD.

Most of the hotel will have the Compass license (but pls double confirm with your respective hotel) if not you will have to buy the Compass license as well

COMPASS represents the copyright interest of composers, authors and publishers of musical works and their lyrics.

RIPS grants licences for public performance of karaoke and/or music videos owned or controlled by the record companies that RIPS represents.
The rights licensed by RIPS and COMPASS are therefore different, and you will still need a RIPS licence to use videos licensed by RIPS, even if you have obtained a COMPASS licence.

Wedding couples who reproduce sound recordings as background music for their own wedding video (including montages) for non-domestic use are required to apply for a licence from RIPS.

You can use up to five sound recordings in a single wedding video or photo montage. If you have 2 videos/montages, you will need 2 license

RIP licence allows you to reproduce the sound recordings in their original form (i.e. the original vinyl record/tape/CD purchased from the shop) as background music for your wedding video or photo montage. You are not allowed to edit or alter the sound recordings (including combining two or more sound recordings to create a new track).
The five sound recordings licensed for reproduction as background music under this licence must be used as individual tracks, i.e. without remixing or combining tracks.

For the future btbs, who are thinking of diying your own childhood montage. U may want to reconsider due to all the licenses that you will need to get for it. After speaking to the relevant authorities, we have decided to outsource our childhood montage to our vg since we find that it is more worth it and less of a hassle.

I have spoken to a RIP representative and these are the Qn i asked him:

1) Does it mean that I need to purchase the Reproduction of Lyrics & Musical Works Licence as well? on top of the RIP license?

Yes. It is like a Part 1 and Part 2 thing. RIP license only cover the song. But does not cover the song composer etc, So in order for you to use even if only 1 song. U need to purchase both the RIP license and the Reproduction of Lyrics & Musical Works license

2) Do I need to purchase the RIP license if I'm going to use unofficial songs eg Beautiful in White?

No need but you need to contact the "owner" of the song for a black n white letter to say that they allow u to use their song -_-"

3) I am considering buying the app from http://animoto.com to do my montage. Songs are provided by animoto. If that's the case, do I still need to purchase the RIP license since the songs are provided in the app itself?

Some of the songs in Animoto which are under RIP control does not have a license, So there is still a need to purchase both the RIP license and the Reproduction of Lyrics & Musical Works license.
(The rep recommend me not to buy that app but use a Free app if possible for the montage, as he claims that it is like paying both sides)
