2014 Food post #2 : TimHoWan 添好運, Bedok Mall

Haven been eating much upon returning to Sg cause mr Cheong has been sick, caught a cold. So we have been staying at home pretty much over the weekend. Yesterday evening, we went to have dinner with my family as today 6 Jan is mum's bday. My family went for a movie prior to meeting the 2 of us.we decided to treat mummy to the famous n popular TimHoWan 添好運. As u know it has somehow created a craze at their PS outlet -forever long queue. We went to the outlet at the newly opened Bedok mall instead.
The whole bedok interchange area was super crowded n we have difficulty finding parking lots thus late. My family who have been queuing up for the past 45 min were not allowed to get into the restaurant as they needed all guests to be here before u can enter /place your order. When we reached, the host faced a little difficulty in getting us to our tables. She told the crew inside that there were 7 of us but those ple inside thought that there were only 4 n set up e wrg table for us. Only realizing their mistake when e large grp of us enter ...zzzzz they immediately make e necessary changes for us though...
1st impression of the restaurant was "service need to be improved"

Menu of TImHoWan is just a piece of paper like those used by some airlines to lay the 'table' before the tray of food.. Not my sian-ess. They serve limited varieties. The do not serve the liu sa bao which is so famous in HK n they do not serve many of the usual dim sum stuff.
Take a quick look at the menu below n u will know what I mean if u haven get to get a chance to try...

We ordered the famous Baked Bun with BBQ pork, one of their speciality aka the 4 heavenly kings 4大天王
1) Baked Bun with BBQ pork
 $4.50 for 3 pieces
Haha my sisters have ordered a total of 9 of this... But I guess that's how it should be since there were 7 of us.
First look of the Baked Bun with BBQ pork, doesn't look like Cha siew bun lol. Unlike the typical steamed Cha siew bun, this is baked. The skin of it is more like e biscuits sold at Popeyes. Crispy. The skin is not too thick not too thin. Just nice. I will say yes the Baked Bun with BBQ pork is indeed special in its own way.

Jaslyn's Rating for the Baked Bun with BBQ pork: 8.5/10 (good definitely worth the try)
My family's rating for the Baked Bun with BBQ pork :9/10

2) Congee with lean pork, century egg and salted egg
    Price: $4.20

The congee is ok. Portion is for 1 person. But that's provided u only want to eat their congee after queuing for so long n nothing else. Haha. The 'Liao' inside is on the low side but still acceptable... To me I find that the congee taste was average very much like those selling in other Chinese restaurants.

Jaslyn's rating for the Congee:  5/10  ( better not to waste space of ur stomach, try other items)
My family's rating for the Congee: 5/10

3)Rice with beef and fried egg
 Price: $6/small tin
This is totally not worth the money. one of the most expensive item on the menu but it doesnt worth that price. The egg on top was poached btw. The sauce is poured in just before it was served to the customers. Causing the egg to be quite saltish. Whereas the bottom under the beef is just plain white rice. U definitely need to mix them well yourself but because the tin is so small, it is actually very difficult to mix the rice well. so eventually u will end up with very saltish stuff for the first few mouths.. n subsequently just plan rice.

Jaslyn's Rating for Rice with beef and fried egg : 3/10
My family's rating for Rice with beef and fried egg: 4/10

4) Pan fried carrot cake
 Price: $4.50/3pcs
Pan Fried carrot cake is another one of their speciality ( the 4 heavenly kings 4大天王 ) Unlike the normal pan fried carrot cake u taste in other dim sum serving restaurants, you can actually taste radish in the cake itself. Almost every bite, u will get sliced radish. Personally I do not like the strong taste of the radish. in their Pan Fried carrot cake but for those who love radish. I think this is something you must definitely try.

Jaslyn's rating for Pan Fried Carrot Cake: 4/10
My family's rating for Pan Fried Carrot Cake: 8/10

5)Prawn dumpling
 Price: $5.50/4pcs
Prawn dumplings were piping hot when served. They dont dry up as fast as other restaurants. Not sure if it is cause of the humidity level or they have done something special to cause that to happen., the prawn dumplings were able to retain their moisture after about 5min. The skin of the Prawn dumplings were not too thick nor was it too thin.. it matches the amount of filling in the dumpling.
However, taste wise, I find it very normal.

Jaslyn's rating for Prawn dumplings: 6/10
My family's rating for Prawn dumplings: 6/10

6) Glutinous Rice Dumpling
 Price: $5
I will highly recommend this Glutinous Rice dumpling! Why?
First, the portion is quite big compared to other dim sum restaurants, definitely worth the $5.
Secondly, it is one of the best glutinous rice dumpling which I have ever tasted. Usually I wouldnt really like this, but this time round, I would have eaten more if only im not full to the brim already

Jaslyn's Rating forGlutinous Rice dumpling: 8.5/10 (good definitely worth the try)
My family's rating for Glutinous Rice dumpling :8.5/10

7) Wasabi salad prawn dunpling
 Price: $3.80
Got a surprise when the wasabi salad prawn dumpling was served. I didnt expect it to look this way. I was looking at the order chip instead of the paper menu when I ordered this. Give it a miss if possible. They taste similar to the shrimp dumplings which u can get from Kopitiam at 3 for $2

Jaslyn's rating for Wasabi salad prawn dumpling : 4/10
My family's rating for Wasabi salad prawn dumpling :4/10

8) Steamed egg cake
Price: $3.80/pc
The look of the cake doesnt look yummy. but I was hoping that the taste will be different from its looks since this is another specialty of Tim Ho Wan. 1 of the other  4 heavenly kings 4大天王. Cake was definitely airy and spongy. 口感 is like pandan chiffon cake? Taste wise was however below my expectation. It taste normal.

Jaslyn's rating for Steamed egg cake : 5/10
My family's rating for Steamed egg cake :6/10

9) Pork dumpling with shrimp
Price : $5/4pcs
Tim Ho Wan's Pork dumpling with shrimp is not to my liking. Not even Mr Cheong who likes to eat Siew Mai. Each small piece cost $1.25. Paying $1.25/pc for something like this is totally unacceptable! there seem to be no marination done to the filling. Never again

Jaslyn's rating for Pork dumpling with shrimp : 2/10
Family's rating for Pork dumpling with shrimp : 5/10

10) Beancurd Skin roll with Pork and shrimp
$4/3pcs
The beancurd skin is too thick for the fillings. For most bites I could only taste the beancurd skin n not the pork nor the shrimp. Taste of the sauce wasnt too bad though

Jaslyn's rating for  Beancurd Skin roll with Pork and shrimp : 5/10
Family's rating for  Beancurd Skin roll with Pork and shrimp : 4/10

11)Yam dumpling with Chili crab meat
Price :$5/3pcs
This is quite special I would say. Yam with chili crab meat. The outside of it was crispy and crunchy. PP actually quite like this. Im nor chili/spicy food taker but I can actually tolerate the spicy level of this.. so this means. almost everyone can eat it...

Jaslyn's rating for  Yam dumpling with Chili crab meat : 6/10
Family's rating for Yam dumpling with Chili crab meat : 8/10

So will I patronize TimHoWan again? Yes but that's provided that I do not need to queue for so long...
